Drawzy’s Declassified: The Auckland Beyblade Buying Guide

Intro
Starting a new hobby can be super daunting. This is especially true when it involves flying metal tops and a dizzying amount of gear. Even if you are already “in the know,” it’s not always easy to pick out those diamonds in the rough.
For my fellow bladers looking to jump into the scene, or the veterans who keep asking, “Drawzy, where do you get all your good beys from?” (yes, people actually ask me that… maybe!), this is for you. While I source a lot of my collection right here in Auckland, I definitely look elsewhere to find those rare gems. Here is the ultimate breakdown of exactly where I get my Beyblades.
Hasbro vs Takara Tomy
If you haven’t heard it yet, you will likely hear the terms Hasbro and Takara Tomy (TT) soon. They refer to the two main companies behind Beyblade. Hasbro has the rights in the West (like NZ), while Takara Tomy distributes throughout Asia.
- Hasbro: (Easily found in local shops)
- Features “tighter” ratchets in the new Beyblade X line.
- Releases can be slightly less frequent.
- Takara Tomy:
- Massive variety and monthly releases.
- Usually imported by resellers.
- Typically costs more due to shipping and currency conversion.
Drawzy Tip: There isn’t a massive performance gap between TT and Hasbro right now, so don’t get too stuck in the sauce! Buy what you can find and start battling.
1. The Everyday Legends (Retailers)
The Warehouse, Kmart, Farmers, Toy World, Whitcoulls, Mighty Ape
These are your bread and butter. If you are in Auckland, you are probably never more than fifteen minutes away from one of these spots.
- Mighty Ape: A personal favourite. Their shipping is lightning fast with the “Jungle Express” option. If you order before the cutoff (usually midday), you can even pick it up the same day from their Silverdale warehouse.
- The Warehouse (West City): The Warehouse is generally a good spot, but the West City branch is a standout. In my experience, it is a hot spot for consistent stock and new waves.
- Farmers: One of the original “IYKYK” spots for Beyblades! While the selection can be hit-or-miss these days, you can often find a massive steal during their red-dot sales.
- Whitcoulls: This is a wildcard! You won’t often find a huge wall of Beys here, but on the rare occasion, they have some hard-to-find Hasbro blades that are sold out everywhere else.
Drawzy Tip: If you head to West City, you can do a Triple Whammy. Farmers, The Warehouse, and Card Merchant are all super close to each other. You can even swing by the Henderson Toyworld on your way out. Bonus Tip: It is often cheaper to split with a friend during those Farmers red-dot sales to maximize the discount!
2. The Specialty Hobby Shops
Hobby Lords, Card Merchant, Otakumart, Totara Hobbies
- Hobby Lords (Takapuna): They are great at sourcing hard-to-find Hasbro stock. They even host a hobby league on Monday nights if you want to test your skills! They primarily stock Hasbro blades.
- Card Merchant: We have hosted tournaments here before and the staff are legends. Super helpful and they really support the local scene – and stock Hasbro blades.
- Otakumart & Totara Hobbies: I haven’t personally ordered from these two yet, but the word on the street from my blader friends is that they are top-tier for reliability and imports.
3. The Diamond Merchants
Bey Stall, Pax Beys, Beyblade Landscape, Beyblade X Wellington
If you’re looking for the high-end goods, these are the ones. These sellers stock Takara Tomy (TT) beys and often facilitate pre-orders for the newest Asia/Japanese releases.
- Beyblade Landscape: This is where I first started getting my TT beys. They are still reliable to this day. Check them out on Facebook and Trade Me.
- Beyblade X Wellington: Another great source on Facebook messenger and Trade Me. They are currently the only reseller I know of that provides Afterpay.
- Bey Stall: Primarily operates through Facebook. They use a trust model for pre-orders (no upfront cost), which is awesome. They also do “Rare Bey Get” battle redeems!
- Pax Beys: Is the primary distributor for Australia that heavily supports the NZ scene. A great source for all your competitive needs. You can find his website here.
